After battling with cancer in 2017, Kyler Sahlmark decided to transition from female to male. In 2023 Kyler won a $10,000 grant through Telus Storyhive to explain the story of his transition. "Trans Man" is a six part docuseries, filmed in the Southern Okanagan, and premiered on Optik TV and Storyhive's YouTube Channel in September 2024.
With the dramatic changes happening in the world, Kyler realized how potent these episodes are for opening conversation and exploring hard topics in safe spaces. This project was created with intention and offered in compassion and good faith. The episodes along with the group work pull back the curtain to offer you the personal lived experience and reality of life as a Transman.
Within each course format, Leadership will receive a time schedule template, all handout files, links to all episodes and advertising materials.
Each workshop requires 2 leadership roles:
Within the workshop you are provided with handouts that guide you through each episode with topics of discussion, new vocabulary terms, a list of 2SLGBTQIA+ media and resources along with suggested questions to guide group dialogue.
As a parent of a trans youth, I appreciate the safe space for learning and sharing. Made me consider safety, the internal and interpersonal and how this is for trans people. I am reflecting on how I can better foster safety for them. And as a result I have more compassion for others and myself in seeing the sacredness of transitions. Thank you so much! - Marrilyn
I took Prisms because I want to learn more to understand my son and his friends. Thank you for hosting this. I found it very informative. I would definitely attend another and recommend it to any parent or guardian going through this with their child. - Sharon
I had no idea of the term chosen family and how painful it is to not be chosen by your own family. Now I need to go and ask, 'If I am not in your chosen family, what do I need to do to be in it?' - Karin
